This theme has come up a lot in my conversations on Light Bulb Moments. Today I want to discuss how networking can help you, your business, and your goals.
Why is Networking Important
- Unlock New Opportunities – Networking opens doors to collaborations and partnerships that you might not find otherwise.
- Find the Right People for Your Team – Expanding your network makes it easier to connect with talent and build a strong team.
- Strengthen Your Brand – Engaging regularly in your industry helps establish your business growth.
Five Strategies to Build a Stronger Network
It is important to strategize how to expand your network. Here are five strategies I have learned that have helped me.
- Show Up and Engage
Industry events, trade shows, and conferences are opportunities to make connections. But as Jay Winkler, in Episode 46, emphasized, it’s not just about being present—it’s about having real conversations and asking great questions. - Tap Into Local Business Communities
Through industry groups, advisory boards, and volunteer opportunities, getting involved can open unexpected doors. Barry Waitte, in Episode 37, shared how he leveraged his Silicon Valley connections to successfully pivot into Napa Valley’s wine industry. His story proves that strong networks help you navigate career transitions. - Make Networking a Regular Practice
Set aside time each week to check in with contacts, attend events, or introduce yourself to new people. Consistency is how you can keep your network active. - Use Technology to Stay Connected
LinkedIn, professional groups, and social media make it easier to keep relationships over time. Just as Doug Sandler and I discuss in Episode 35, a simple follow-up message or thoughtful comment can go a long way in keeping connections strong. - Give Without Expecting Immediate Returns
The best networkers focus on adding value first. Marty Dunne, in Episode 32, pointed out that some of his strongest relationships started with him offering help, expecting nothing in return. Building trust leads to long-term, meaningful connections.
The biggest takeaway? Networking is about building relationships that create opportunities for everyone involved. Again and again, guests on Light Bulb Moments have shared how strong connections led them to major breakthroughs. I encourage you to show up, start a conversation, offer value, and ask questions. Your next Light Bulb Moment could be just one connection away.
