Why This Episode Matters
This episode is for leaders and investors navigating the intersection of business and life. It reinforces that ownership requires alignment, discipline, and continuous learning. If you want to build something lasting, start by investing wisely – in your business, your team, and yourself.
In this Episode, We Discuss:
- Owning and aligning in business and investing
- Finding opportunity in small-cap public markets
- Balancing concentration and diversification
- Gardening, entrepreneurship, and mentoring
Conversation Takeaways
- Bill and Phil emphasize “eating your own cooking,” ensuring owners have skin in the game. Employee ownership at Advisory Research aligns incentives with clients and stakeholders. Small-cap companies offer clarity on business, management, and culture, unlike large corporations.
- Small-cap equities hold roughly $2 trillion, yet fewer analysts and investors focus here. This creates opportunities for deep research and active engagement. Governance and meaningful stock ownership align management with shareholders.
- Diversification protects wealth and suits most investors, while concentration builds wealth with skill and discipline. A strong business produces returns above its cost of capital. “Concentration gets you rich, diversification helps you stay rich” captures the approach.
- Gardening provides therapy, legacy, and a chance to improve through continuous effort. Ownership lessons extend to entrepreneurship, from Japanese restaurants to professional ventures. Teaching younger generations about capitalism and mentorship fosters meaningful community learning beyond social media.
“The secret of a great business is a business that earns a higher return than its cost of capital… if a dollar goes into that business, you’re going to get a lot more than a dollar out.” – Bill Florida
